Low Hills Park

The moorland around Elland rewards proper exploration, and Low Hills Park is where you'll find it. This nature reserve sits on gritstone uplands with working farmland threading through, giving you proper Yorkshire landscape without the crowds you'd hit at the better-known spots.

You get open grassland, rough heather patches, and decent views back towards the Pennines on a clear day. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. There are walking routes through the reserve itself, though nothing too strenuous - this isn't fell country, just honest moorland that doesn't make a fuss about itself.

The real appeal here is if you're after a quieter walk from base camp. Families with walkers aged eight and up will get something from it; younger kids might find it a bit monotonous without specific attractions. Local history types will appreciate the industrial heritage buried in the landscape - this area's textiles past is written into the fields.

Camp at either Holme Valley (5 miles down the road, seriously good reviews) or Secret Valley Escapes (6 miles away, equally solid) and you've got a proper base for exploring this corner of West Yorkshire without fighting the Lake District queues.

Go early on a weekday if you can. The weather up there shifts fast, so check conditions first.
