Low Burnhall is a Woodland Trust property just outside Durham, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than deliberately plan around. The woodland here is genuinely lovely - mature trees, proper walking trails, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to the countryside in the first place.

It's free to access, which is brilliant, and there's enough path to keep you occupied for anything from half an hour to a couple of hours depending on your mood. Families with younger kids will get on fine with the easier routes, though it's not a playground situation - this is about walking and looking, not climbing frames. If you're based at Grove Farm or Durham Grange Caravan Park nearby, it's a genuinely convenient leg-stretch without needing to drive far.

The woodland itself is managed properly by the Trust, so you won't find it overgrown or neglected. Spring is when it really comes alive with bluebells and birdsong, though autumn's decent too if you like kicking through leaves. Winter's fine if the ground isn't waterlogged, but check conditions first - some sections can get boggy.

Truth is, Low Burnhall isn't going to be the highlight of your Durham trip. It's not that kind of destination.
