Loughnagay

The water at Loughnagay sits there quietly, dark and still, reflecting whatever the Ulster sky decides to throw at it on the day you visit. It's a proper small lake, nothing dramatic - no massive visitor centre or car park with a gift shop. You come here because you want to sit by water that hasn't been turned into a tourist attraction, which is exactly what makes it worth the short drive from Cookstown.

Walkers and bird watchers get the most from Loughnagay. There's a path around the perimeter, gentle enough for families who don't mind a moderate walk, and the reeds attract a solid variety of waterfowl. In winter especially, you might spot something interesting if you've got binoculars. The surrounding fields give you proper open views - no crowded banks, no selfie sticks.

How long to spend here depends entirely on your temperament. Thirty minutes for a quick circuit and a sit-down? Realistic. Two hours if you're photographing birds or just want to be properly quiet? That works too. There's no admission charge that I'm aware of, and there's nowhere to buy a coffee, so come prepared.

If you're staying at Sperrinview Glamping just down the road, Loughnagay makes a straightforward morning or evening outing. It won't dominate your holiday, but it's the sort of place that sticks with you more than somewhere engineered for crowds. Sometimes that's enough.
