Loughislandreavey

A freshwater lough ringed by bog and woodland on the outskirts of Newcastle, Loughislandreavey is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. The water itself is dark and still, reflecting whatever sky's above - grey more often than not in these parts. The real pull here is the walk around it, a quiet loop through heathland where you might spot curlews or a heron if you're lucky and keep your voice down.

It's proper territory for keen birdwatchers and walkers after something low-key. The reserve sees fewer visitors than the busier spots closer to the Mourne Mountains, which means you won't be queuing or fighting for space. An hour or so is enough to do the circuit without feeling rushed, though there's no harrying anyone who wants to linger. The boggy patches can be squelchy depending on the weather, so decent boots are non-negotiable.

If you're camping at Tollymore Campsite or Pine Tree Hollow - both within three miles - this works as a gentle add-on to a Mourne holiday. It's less dramatic than Tollymore Forest Park itself, but that's partly the appeal. You're looking at a natural space that feels more authentic, less manicured. There's no visitor centre, no café, no crowds. Just water, birds, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to County Down in the first place. Worth the drive from Newcastle if you've got a morning spare.
