Lough Shannagh

Finding this alpine-like lake tucked between the granite peaks requires a proper mountain walk, but the reward is one of the Mournes' most spectacular sights. Lough Shannagh sits in a dramatic corrie, its dark waters reflecting the surrounding summits on calm days. The walk up from the Trassey Track is steep and rocky - allow three hours for the round trip from the car park.

Serious walkers will love this spot. It's not a gentle family stroll by any means, though teenagers with decent fitness should manage fine. The path can be boggy after rain, so proper hiking boots are essential. Early morning visits often catch the lake at its most serene, before the day walkers arrive.

From Newcastle, the drive to the Trassey car park takes about twenty minutes through increasingly wild countryside. The lake makes a cracking objective for those staying at nearby sites like Tollymore Campsite or Bloody Bridge Campsite, both well-positioned for Mourne adventures. Photography enthusiasts particularly rate the reflections here, especially when Bearnagh's granite tors catch the light.

Bring a flask and sandwiches - there's something rather special about having lunch beside this mountain tarn. Just don't expect any facilities beyond what nature provides.
