Longstone Hill

The walk up Longstone Hill rewards you with views across Dartmoor that stretch for miles. It's not the highest peak around Okehampton, but the climb is straightforward enough and the summit cairn makes for a proper focal point once you're up there.

On a clear day you can see right across the moorland - that brown-purple sweep of heather and gorse that defines this part of Devon. The hill itself draws walkers rather than casual strollers, so expect to share the path with people who know what they're doing. Reckon on 90 minutes return from most starting points, though it depends where you park.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might find the exposed moorland a bit relentless - there's not much shelter up there, and the wind can pick up. History types won't find much to work with here; it's geology and landscape that matter.

The best approach is from near Okehampton, where you'll find proper parking and clear tracks onto the moor. Lydford Caravan & Camping Park sits just 5 miles away, making this an easy morning or afternoon outing if you're basing yourself there. Go early if the weather looks decent - moorland conditions change fast, and afternoon mist can roll in without warning. Boots are essential; trainers won't cut it when the ground's wet.
