Longmead Row

Walk through Longmead Row and you're immediately in proper New Forest territory - a quiet stretch of woodland that feels miles from anywhere despite being barely outside Lyndhurst. It's the kind of place where the trees do most of the talking: ancient oaks mixed with younger pines, the ground soft with decades of needles and leaves underfoot.

This is woodland for walkers rather than a formal attraction with facilities or entry fees. You'll find open access forest floor, winding paths that occasionally fork without warning, and enough space to actually lose the crowds that gather at the more popular New Forest spots. The forest floor is gently undulating, so it won't exhaust you, though sturdy boots help when it's wet.

Families with young walkers do well here - it's engaging enough to hold kids' attention without being so remote that you're genuinely concerned about getting lost. Photographers will find decent light filtering through the canopy, particularly in morning hours. Serious hikers treating it as part of a wider New Forest loop will appreciate the straightforward navigation and peaceful atmosphere.

Given it's free-access forest, there's no entry charge and no operating hours to worry about. Allow one to two hours depending on how far you want to wander. It pairs naturally with the nearby New Forest National Park as part of a wider day, or as a quieter alternative if you're based at one of the local campsites - Roundhill or Hollands Wood are both within easy reach. Spring and autumn offer the best walking conditions; summer can be boggy in patches.
