Longleat House

The first thing that hits you about Longleat is the sheer audacity of the place. This isn't some modest country pile - it's a proper Elizabethan showcase, all golden stone and mullioned windows sprawling across the Wiltshire landscape near Warminster. Built in the 1580s by Sir John Thynne, the house itself is a masterclass in Renaissance architecture, with rooms that'll make you crane your neck at ceilings and lose track of time wandering corridors lined with centuries of accumulated treasures.

What makes Longleat different from your typical stately home is that the owners actually want you to see it properly. The house tours give you access to genuinely impressive rooms - the great kitchens, the library with its barrel-vaulted ceiling, libraries crammed with leather spines. If you've got kids, they'll drag you straight to the safari park, which has been running since the 1960s and remains the main draw for families. But if you can get them past that promise, the house itself rewards close attention.

Book a full day if you're doing both house and grounds. The nearby caravan sites - particularly Center Parcs Longleat Forest just a couple of miles away or The Treehouses for something different - make sensible bases for exploring the estate properly. Warminster town centre offers a few decent pubs and restaurants if you're not self-catering. Go mid-week if you can manage it; weekends pull in crowds that make the narrow staircases feel properly rammed. Spring and early summer offer the best light through those long windows.
