The first time you round the bend and spot Longleat House rising from its parkland, you understand why this place has been pulling visitors for centuries. It's a proper stately home - all golden stone and Renaissance grandeur - set within 900 acres that feel genuinely wild in places. The house itself is extraordinary: a maze of rooms filled with art, tapestries, and the kind of historical detail that makes you slow down and actually read the plaques.

But Longleat isn't just about standing in velvet ropes admiring the furniture. The grounds are the real draw. There's a safari park where you drive past giraffes and zebras from your car (or take their minibus if you're feeling less confident), a maze that'll have you cursing within twenty minutes, and woodland walks that work brilliantly if you've got restless kids or just need to stretch your legs properly. The whole estate has an unpretentious, slightly mad energy - it's not trying too hard to be serious, which is refreshing.

With the Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite practically on the doorstep and Center Parcs Longleat Forest just down the road, you could easily spend three or four days here without leaving. The nearest town is Warminster, about five miles off, but honestly you won't need it. Allow a full day if you're doing house and grounds properly, though families often find the safari and maze enough for their first visit.

It costs to get in, but given the scale of what's on offer, it's fair value. Go midweek in shoulder season if you can - summer weekends get rammed with school groups.
