Longdell Wood

Walk into Longdell Wood and you're in proper woodland - the sort where you actually feel like you've left Hitchin behind, even though it's barely a stone's throw away. Beech and oak dominate the canopy, and in spring the floor comes alive with bluebells if you time it right. The paths are well-maintained but can get muddy, so decent boots matter. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - it's refreshingly straightforward, just woodland as it should be.

This is walker territory. Family groups with older kids will manage fine, but it's not a destination for anyone after playground infrastructure or a café halfway round. You're looking at a decent two-hour loop if you're meandering, less if you've got places to be. The wood sits just east of Hitchin, making it easy to combine with a spell at Radwell Lake campsite a few miles south - one complements the other well. You get the quiet forest walk here, then water views and proper facilities over there.

Come autumn and the whole place shifts tone entirely. Golden light filters through thinning leaves, and crowds thin out completely. Summer can feel a touch claustrophobic if others have the same idea. Free to access, no closing times that anyone could tell me about - it's the sort of place that works on trust and common sense. Worth the detour if you're into genuine woodland and don't need hand-holding.
