About Long Stone

A solitary slab of stone, about four metres tall, stands in open moorland just outside Haltwhistle. The Long Stone is a Neolithic monument - Bronze Age, possibly - though nobody's entirely sure what it once was. A marker stone? Part of a burial site? The guessing is half the appeal, really. You'll need to do a bit of walking to reach it, and there's no visitor centre or interpretation board to explain what you're looking at, which somehow makes it more compelling than somewhere packaged and polished. The views across the Northumberland hills are genuinely worth the trek alone. This isn't a place you'll spend hours at. Twenty minutes, tops, unless you're the type to sit and contemplate ancient ritual practices. It suits walkers far more than families with restless kids, and it's completely free because there's nothing to charge for - you just turn up. The moorland around it is proper wild. Bring a map, decent footwear, and expect wind. Rain too, probably. If you're camped at Hadrian's Wall Campsite or one of the nearby glamping spots like Herding Hill Farm or Langley Dam, it's a straightforward morning walk. The combination works well - you get a bit of archaeology, some serious fresh air, and a genuine sense of following a trail that tourists usually skip. Not everyone's cup of tea, but for anyone interested in prehistory or landscape, it's well worth the detour from the main Hadrian's Wall route.
