Long Rock

Long Rock juts out into the shallows near Whitstable like a proper finger of defiance against the North Sea. It's exactly what the name suggests - a rocky outcrop that's been drawing locals and curious visitors for years, particularly when the tide's out and you can actually reach it without wading waist-deep.

You'll find it's genuinely worth the walk from Whitstable's seafront, though the appeal depends entirely on your expectations. If you're after Instagram-ready drama, you might feel a touch let down - it's not towering or particularly theatrical. But if you like the bones of coastal geology, the way weathered rock tells a story, and you don't mind getting your feet damp, there's something satisfying about standing out there with the water lapping around you.

The walk takes maybe twenty minutes from town centre, and you'll see oyster beds and working fishing boats en route, which frankly adds more interest than the rock itself. Families with younger kids get restless after an hour or so, unless they're the type who'll happily hunt for crabs in pools for ages. It's free, obviously, and there's no admission to worry about.
