The appeal here is quiet rather than spectacular. Birdwatchers do well, particularly in spring and autumn when migratory species pass through. It's also genuinely useful if you're staying nearby at Thriftwood Country Park, only five miles away, and need a gentle outing that doesn't require much planning. Families with young kids will manage fine, though there's no playground or facilities to speak of, so bring what you need.

Worth the detour? Only if you're already in the area. It doesn't justify a special journey from London, and it's not one of those Instagram-baiting spots. But if you're based at Thriftwood for a week and want a low-key walk without crowds, it does the job. The path is mostly flat, so it's accessible for all abilities. Go on a weekday morning if you can - you'll actually see birds instead of just hearing them.
