Long Covert

A proper woodland walk through ancient forest, Long Covert sits east of Woodbridge and feels like stepping back about three hundred years. The trees here are old - genuinely old - and the paths wind through what's clearly been managed forestland for centuries. You're looking at mixed woodland, mostly, with decent paths that don't require specialist gear, though wellies are smart if it's been wet.

The appeal is straightforward: it's peaceful. No crowds, no facilities, just trees and birdsong and the occasional rustle of something in the undergrowth. Local walkers know it well, and you'll spot dog-walkers most afternoons, but it never feels rammed. Allow a couple of hours if you want to properly explore rather than dash through.

Walkers will get the most from this, particularly those who like woodland navigation without the gym-class intensity of open moorland. Families with kids old enough to handle uneven terrain and the occasional muddy patch will be fine - it's not dramatic enough to bore them outright, but don't expect playground-style excitement either.

Timing-wise, spring when the bluebells do their thing makes it worth a specific trip. Summer's pleasant if you're after shade. Winter's actually quite good if you're not bothered by grey skies and mud.
