Long Copse

The woods around Long Copse are proper old-school Wiltshire woodland - all mature beech and oak, with that thick canopy that keeps things cool even on warm days. You're looking at a genuine working forest rather than a manicured country estate, which means it feels less visited than some of the better-known patches. Walking in here is straightforward enough, though the paths can get boggy after rain, so wellies aren't a bad shout.

This is one for people who actually want to walk, not just stroll. Chippenham's only a few miles away, so it's easy enough to reach from the town, but once you're under the trees you won't find cafes or visitor facilities. Bring a map if you're not confident with navigation - the forest floor looks much the same in every direction. Most people allow two to three hours, depending on how far in they fancy going.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Devizes Camping and Caravanning Club Site is closest at 4.4 miles - Long Copse works well as a morning walk before heading somewhere with actual amenities for lunch. It's also decent for letting kids burn off energy, though they might find it a bit samey once the novelty of the trees wears off. Hardcore walkers and anyone chasing a proper woodland experience will get more from it. The forest is free to access, which at least means you're not out anything if it's not your thing.
