Long Chains Combe South

The walk down into Long Chains Combe South is genuinely steep - I'm talking proper thigh-burning stuff - but it's absolutely worth the effort if you're into archaeology or just love Devon's dramatic ravine scenery. Once you drop down through the woodland, you're looking at what's essentially a Bronze Age settlement tucked into the valley, with the remains of ancient structures scattered across the combes. The site itself is rather understated - no interpretation boards, no visitor facilities - which means you need to come knowing what you're after or bring a decent guide with you. That said, there's something compelling about picking your way through genuine prehistoric remains without the modern heritage site apparatus getting in the way.

Near Lynton, this is ideally suited to serious walkers and archaeology enthusiasts rather than families after a quick spin round. Allow two hours minimum once you've descended, partly because the terrain's rough underfoot. The nearest proper accommodation is Lynmouth Holiday Retreat, just four miles away - a solid base for exploring this corner of Exmoor. Combine it with a walk down the valley for the full experience; the combe itself is a decent scramble in places. Go in dry weather. The site's free to access but frankly, it demands more effort than your average historical attraction, so come prepared and come purposeful.
