Long Acre

Long Acre is a proper woodland walk just outside Kirkcudbright, the sort of place you stumble upon when you're exploring the Dumfries & Galloway backroads rather than somewhere you'd necessarily plan for. It's a forest, dense enough that you lose the sense of being near civilisation, with decent paths threading through the trees that give you options depending on how much time you've got and how muddy you're willing to get.

The walking here suits anyone who wants a break from the coast without venturing too far inland. You'll find families with young kids managing the easier routes fine, but it's not a destination with facilities or views that'll wow you - it's more about the simple pleasure of being among trees. Allow an hour or so for a decent wander, maybe longer if you're the type who stops to identify birds or just think.

If you're camped at one of the sites nearby - Silver Craigs is barely half a mile away - Long Acre works as an excellent morning walk before heading into Kirkcudbright proper for lunch or a browse round the galleries. It's the sort of place that breaks up a seaside holiday nicely, especially if you've done a fair bit of coastal walking already at other spots in the area.

Worth knowing: there's no visitor centre or café here, so come prepared. It's free to enter, and you can really visit any time, though early morning or late afternoon tends to feel less crowded if that matters to you.
