Lofthouse Hill Golf Club

The drive out to Lofthouse Hill near Wakefield takes you through proper Yorkshire countryside - rolling fields and stone walls that make you feel like you've properly left town behind. The golf club sits high on a hill, which is where it gets its name, and the views across the Pennines on a clear day are genuinely worth the trip even if you're not swinging a club.

You'll need to be a member or book a guest round in advance - this isn't a pay-as-you-go sort of place. But if you've got any interest in golf at all, the course is well maintained and challenging enough to keep you honest. The 18 holes take about four hours if you're moving at a decent pace. Non-golfers might find themselves twiddling their thumbs in the clubhouse, to be frank, though the views from the terrace are decent enough for a coffee and a sit-down.

It's a solid base if you're staying at Broadlands Farm Touring Caravan Site just five miles away - you could squeeze in a round before breakfast or after an afternoon exploring the wider area. The clubhouse has all the usual facilities: bar, restaurant, changing rooms. Peak summer weekends book up fast, so sort yourself out early if that's when you're heading through.
