Lodge Wood

Lodge Wood is a proper Lancashire woodland tucked just outside Preston - the sort of place locals know about but most visitors walk straight past. You get decent mixed forest here: mature trees, understory shrubs, and enough space to actually breathe without tripping over dog walkers every thirty seconds.

It's not vast, mind you. A solid walk takes maybe forty-five minutes to an hour depending on how often you stop to poke about. The paths are reasonably maintained, though they can get boggy in winter - bring decent boots rather than trainers. There's decent wildlife if you're patient: birds mostly, and you might spot rabbits or muntjac deer if you're lucky. Photographers sometimes come for the light filtering through the canopy, and it's fine for that.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit sparse for a full afternoon's entertainment - it works better as part of a larger day out around Preston rather than a destination on its own. Proper dog walkers love it though, and if you're based at one of the local caravan parks - Orchard Glamping is closest at 3.7 miles away, or North View at 4.3 miles - it makes a decent morning stroll before heading into town.

Free to access, naturally. No facilities to speak of, so arrive prepared. Early spring and autumn are best for avoiding the summer crowds and actually hearing the wood rather than the M6 in the distance.
