Lodge Plantation

The woodland at Lodge Plantation, just outside Pickering, is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - a decent walk through proper North Yorkshire forest if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks. It's genuine woodland, nothing manicured or theme-parked about it. You get forest floor, mixed trees, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Yorkshire in the first place.

Walkers will find it worthwhile. The paths are reasonable, though don't expect them to be signposted like a country estate - this is working woodland, not a visitor attraction with facilities. Allow an hour or so for a gentle amble, longer if you're the type to stop and identify every tree. Kids generally enjoy it if they're past the "are we there yet" stage - there's room to run about and the whole place feels like proper adventure rather than supervised fun.

Families staying at Vale of Pickering Caravan Park or the glamping spots at Wolds Walk or Lahtle Wood won't need to drive far. It's ideal if you want to break up a caravan park day without travelling into Pickering itself. The forest has that useful quality of being free and open, no visitor centre nonsense, though you'll need to be self-sufficient - no cafe, no toilets that I could find. Go early or late in the day if you want it to yourself. Honestly, it's the kind of place that doesn't photograph well or make headlines, but it does exactly what it says: gives you a proper wood to walk through.
