Lodge Hill

Lodge Hill rises just outside Wimborne, and on a clear day the views across Dorset's heathland are genuinely worth the climb. The peak itself isn't dramatic - we're talking rolling countryside rather than Alpine drama - but that's partly the appeal. It's a proper local walk with actual purpose rather than some manufactured scenic spot.

The approach is straightforward and takes maybe twenty to thirty minutes from the nearest car park, depending on fitness. Once up top, you get long sightlines across the Poole Basin and down towards the coast. On a grey day it's just moorland; when the light's right, it's rather lovely. Walkers will appreciate the terrain - nothing too punishing, just genuine old-school Dorset heath.

Families with older kids will manage it without fuss. Younger ones might find it a bit samey halfway through unless you make a game of spotting landmarks. The real draw is solitude. You won't fight crowds here like you would at some honey-pot spots.

If you're based at Dorset Glamping or South Lytchett Manor just down the road, this works as a proper leg-stretcher on a holiday morning. Pair it with a walk through nearby Badbury Rings if you want something with actual history attached, or use it as a warm-up before heading towards the Purbecks. Allow a couple of hours all in. Admission's free, naturally - it's just open access land.
