Lochend Park

Lochend Park sits just outside Kinghorn, a proper freshwater nature reserve that draws birdwatchers and anyone after a quiet spell away from the crowds. The loch itself is the main event - shallow, reed-fringed, and absolutely teeming with waterfowl depending on season. You'll spot grebes, ducks, and if you're lucky, the occasional whooper swan in winter. Walking paths loop around the water's edge, giving you decent views without scrambling over rough terrain.

It's the kind of place that rewards a slow morning with binoculars rather than a rushed hour ticking off a checklist. Bring a proper camera if you're into wildlife photography - the light can be lovely across the water, especially early morning or towards dusk. Kids will enjoy spotting birds and frogs if you prime them beforehand, though it's not a destination that'll hold their attention for hours on end.

The reserve works brilliantly as part of a wider East Lothian ramble - pair it with a longer walk or a visit to nearby coastal spots. If you're camping or glamping at Drummohr just up the road, this is an easy evening stroll after supper. There's no formal visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared - wellies recommended after rain, and bring your own refreshments.
