Lochan Uaine

The emerald waters of Lochan Uaine sit in a quiet pocket of Perthshire, just a few miles from Crieff, and they're genuinely striking - that green is something else. It's a small loch, nothing vast, but the colour comes from mineral deposits in the water and it catches the light beautifully on a clear day.

Walkers get the most from this spot. There's a decent circular path around the loch that takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour, depending on pace and how often you stop to stare at the water. It's accessible enough for most fitness levels, though there are a few slightly boggy sections after rain. Families with younger kids might find it a bit tame - there's no facilities, no cafe, just the loch and the path - but older children who enjoy a proper walk will be fine.

The real appeal is the quiet. You won't find crowds here like you would at Loch Earn or other better-known stretches of water. Early morning is genuinely lovely, when the midges are less aggressive and the light's soft across the water.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Comrie Croft or Twenty Shilling Wood are both close by and excellent - this is worth a morning or afternoon detour. It pairs well with a wider ramble through the Perthshire hills. Admission is free, naturally. Bring proper shoes; the path gets muddy.
