Lochan Fiarach

The walk in to Lochan Fiarach rewards you with something genuinely special - a small loch tucked into the Lowlands that feels properly remote despite being just off the A84 near Crianlarich. It's the sort of place that catches you off guard. The loch itself is modest, but the setting works: tree-lined banks and steep hillsides that give it real character without the tourist footfall of somewhere like Loch Lomond.

You're looking at roughly a 45-minute walk from the road to reach it, which weeds out the casual visitors. The path climbs steadily through woodland, so it's best suited to walkers with decent fitness rather than families wanting a casual stroll. Photography types will appreciate the light filtering through the trees, and birdwatchers often spot grouse and occasionally golden eagles in the area.

Timing matters here. Early morning or late afternoon gives you the best shot at seeing wildlife and having the place to yourself. The loch doesn't freeze reliably enough for winter interest, so May through October is your window. Go on a grey midweek day and you might have it entirely alone.

If you're basing yourself at Tyndrum Holiday Park or Beinglas Campsite - both a short drive away - this makes for a proper half-day excursion without feeling like you're ticking boxes. It's not a major draw in itself, but combined with the Ben Ledi walks or a wander through Glen Dochart, it adds real depth to a Scottish Lowlands trip. Allow three to four hours return, including time to sit and actually look at the thing.
