Lochan Beinn Chabhair

You'll find this mountain loch tucked up in the hills above Arrochar, accessible only by a proper hill walk - there's no road in, which is rather the point. The water sits at around 500 metres, cradled by steep slopes, and on a clear day the reflections are genuinely striking. Allow two to three hours for the round trip from the car park at Butterbridge, depending on fitness. It's a straightforward if steady climb through woodland that opens out as you gain height.

Walkers absolutely will get the most from this one. It's not a stroll - you need reasonable legs and decent boots. The payoff is solitude and proper mountain scenery without the crowds you'd find at Loch Lomond, which sits just down the valley. Summer is best, obviously, though spring can work if the weather holds.

Free to visit, of course. There's a small car park at the start with space for maybe a dozen vehicles. If you're staying at Beinglas Campsite nearby - which is handily placed for this walk - you'll find yourself in excellent company with other outdoor types. Loch Lomond Holiday Park is a touch further south if you want something with more facilities, though the loch is really the draw here rather than the park amenities.

Families with younger kids might find the walk itself a slog. Older teenagers keen on hills? This is their sort of place. On a calm day you can sit by the water for an hour without seeing another soul.
