Lochan a' Chriathraich

The walk down to Lochan a' Chriathraich is proper rewarding - a small dark loch tucked into the Argyll hills above Taynuilt, the kind of place that feels genuinely remote even though you're only twenty minutes from civilization. The water is peaty and still, reflecting the surrounding slopes in a way that's quietly dramatic rather than showy.

You'll need to hike in. It's not massively strenuous - perhaps thirty minutes from the nearest parking - but it's rough enough that you won't find crowds. The loch itself is maybe half the appeal; the real payoff is the sense of having found something that isn't on every guidebook. Walkers and photographers will get the most from it. Families with young kids might find the trek a bit much unless they're used to rougher terrain.

There's no facilities to speak of, so bring water and sturdy boots. The best time is autumn or spring when the light's lower and the whole thing feels moodier. Summer can work but the midges are proper vicious.

If you're based at Loch Awe Holiday Park down the road, this makes a solid morning or afternoon excursion - different enough from the loch-side walks you'll do elsewhere in the area. It's the sort of thing that stays with you more than a big honeypot attraction ever would.
