Loch Pityoulish

The loch itself is absolutely silent on a still morning - water like dark glass reflecting the Cairngorm peaks. Loch Pityoulish sits just outside Aviemore, close enough for a proper walk but far enough to feel genuinely remote. You're looking at a shallow, reed-fringed water body that's absolutely brilliant for spotting red squirrels and osprey if you time it right. The Scottish pine forest wraps around it, and the whole thing feels very much like the Highlands are supposed to feel.

Walkers will get the most from this one. There's a decent circular route around the loch - nothing too strenuous, just you, the water, and an awful lot of silence. Birdwatchers should bring proper binoculars; the osprey fishing in summer is worth the trip alone. Families with younger kids might find an hour enough before restlessness sets in, but keen outdoor types will happily spend half a day here.

It's free to access and you can really visit whenever suits. Early morning is genuinely special if you can manage it. If you're staying at Dalraddy Holiday Park just down the road, this is an easy morning excursion that takes the edge off too many days sitting about the caravan. The whole area around Aviemore - Loch Morlich, the Cairngorms themselves - means you won't run short of walking options, but Pityoulish has a particular appeal for anyone after something quieter and less crowded.
