Loch nan Eun

The walk to Loch nan Eun takes you through proper Perthshire woodland, starting from near Pitlochry and climbing steadily through the trees. It's not a difficult hike - more of a gentle push uphill for around an hour - but you'll feel you've earned the moment you emerge onto the shore. The loch itself is quiet. Small. The kind of place where you might see a golden eagle if you're lucky, though honestly you're more likely to spot red squirrels in the trees behind you. The water reflects the hills beautifully, especially on a clear day, and there's something restorative about having it almost entirely to yourself.

This is walker territory, really. Families with young kids might find the woodland sections a bit muddy, and it's the sort of place where you go for the exercise and the views rather than facilities or activities. There's nothing here except the loch, the trees, and some decent photography opportunities if you're into that. Allow a couple of hours return journey if you're not rushing, longer if you want to sit and watch the water for a bit.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks around Pitlochry - Faskally Woods or Milton Of Fonab are close by - it makes an excellent half-day excursion. Pitlochry itself has the dam and the theatre if the weather turns, but on a decent day Loch nan Eun is worth the leg work. Not Instagram famous, which is entirely the point.
