Loch Morlich Watersports

The loch sits about five miles south of Aviemore, ringed by Caledonian pines that make the whole place feel properly wild. It's a proper Scottish watersports hub - you can kayak, paddleboard, windsurf, or sail depending on conditions and what outfit you're with on the day. The water's cold enough that you'll want a wetsuit even in summer, but that's half the appeal really. The beach area at the north end is sandy and relatively sheltered, and locals reckon it's one of the best freshwater spots in the Highlands for getting on the water without faffing about. A few hours is realistic if you're doing a lesson or renting kit. If you're just watching others or having a paddle, you could easily spend half a day here with a picnic. Families with older kids will get more from it than toddlers - there's not much in the way of facilities, though that's part of its charm. The setting is genuinely good, especially at golden hour when the light hits the water and the mountains beyond. Best visited on a calm day; wind can either make it brilliant or utterly unworkable depending on what you fancy doing.
