Loch Leven Heritage Trail

Walking the full loop around Loch Leven takes the better part of a day, and honestly, it's one of those Scottish outings that rewards you for the effort. The trail runs roughly 13 miles round the loch itself, passing through woodland, farmland and along the water's edge - the views are straightforward rather than dramatic, but there's something satisfying about the steadiness of it all.

You'll spot the ruins of Loch Leven Castle midway round, a proper bit of history sitting on an island. Mary Queen of Scots was held there once, which adds a bit of weight to the walk. The path itself is well-maintained and mostly flat, though sections can get boggy depending on recent rain. Allow four to five hours for the full circuit if you're moving at a decent pace.

Families with young children might find it a bit long - the scenery doesn't change dramatically enough to keep under-tens entertained for five hours straight. It's free and accessible year-round, though autumn and spring are best when you're not wading through summer midges or trudging through winter mud.
