The water here is dark and still, ringed by steep hillsides that rise without apology from the shore. Loch Jourdan - that's the full name, though locals seem to call it Loch J - sits inland from Dingwall, properly remote without being a slog to reach. You're looking at a genuine Highland loch, the kind that rewards a walk along the banks but doesn't demand expertise or special kit.

It's walker territory, really. The loch itself is small enough that you won't be trudging for hours, but the scenery around it is the draw - those mountains pressing in, the occasional burst of light on the water when the cloud clears. There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, which means no crowds either. Bring your own provisions if you're planning a proper afternoon here.

The nearest base is Dingwall, a solid town with proper amenities, though if you're after something more upmarket, Highland Heights Luxury Glamping sits about five miles out and offers decent views across the region. From there, you could string together a few lochs and glens in the same day - this one works as part of a larger Highland ramble rather than a stand-alone draw.

Best visited in reasonably clear weather. Midges can be vicious in July and August, so spring or autumn is sharper timing. Allow two or three hours if you're walking the full circuit, less if you just want a quick gander from the road and a cup of tea.
