There's a modest stone monument standing on the edge of Dingwall that most folk walk straight past - the memorial to Sir Hector Archibald MacDonald, a 19th-century military figure who rose from humble Highland roots to become a decorated soldier. The monument itself is fairly understated, which somehow feels right for a man whose life was complicated and ultimately tragic.

MacDonald was born locally and went on to earn serious military credentials, serving across the Empire during a time when such careers were rare for men of his background. The memorial marks his connection to the area, though you'd be forgiven for missing it entirely if you weren't looking. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation board - just the monument and whatever you bring to it in terms of curiosity about local history.

History buffs will get the most from this, particularly anyone interested in Highland heritage and military history. It's not a destination in itself, but rather a worthwhile stop if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks around Dingwall - Dingwall Camping and Caravanning Club Site is practically on the doorstep, or Beauly Holiday Park and Bunchrew Caravan Park are close by if you want slightly more facilities. The walk into town from any of these takes ten minutes or so.

Allow perhaps five minutes at the monument itself, unless you're planning to spend longer researching MacDonald's life back at your accommodation. It's free, obviously, and you can visit any time. Worth a quick look while you're in the area, though don't expect much ceremony about it.
