Davids Fort

The ruins of a 17th-century fort sit on the banks of the Conon Water, a short walk from Dingwall town centre. What remains are the earthwork fortifications and traces of the bastioned structure - not a lot to look at on first glance, but the history is genuinely interesting. Built around 1649 during Cromwell's occupation of Scotland, this was a military stronghold designed to keep Highland clans in check. You're essentially walking around old defensive banks and ditches, which sounds dry but actually reads the landscape quite clearly once you know what you're looking at. History buffs will find it worthwhile, especially those interested in the English Civil War period and its aftermath in the Highlands. Casual visitors might spend twenty minutes here, tops - it's the kind of spot where the appeal lies more in understanding the story than in dramatic ruins. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, and access appears to be free and open. The site is genuinely atmospheric though, particularly on grey Highland days when the mood rather suits the military history. If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Dingwall Camping and Caravanning Club Site is practically on your doorstep, with Highland Heights Glamping and Beauly Holiday Park also close by - this makes an easy afternoon addition to exploring the town itself. Worth tacking on if you're already in the area, but not worth a dedicated trip unless you're deeply into fortifications and Commonwealth-era Scotland.
