Loch Fuaran

A thin sliver of freshwater tucked into Argyll's west coast, Loch Fuaran sits quietly on the Isle of Mull - the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. The loch itself is modest in scale, but what makes it worth the drive from Tobermory is the walk in: moorland that shifts colour with the season, and on clear days, views that stretch across to neighbouring islands.

There's no cafe, no interpretation board, no fuss - just water, hills, and the particular kind of silence you only find on Mull. The walk takes a good hour depending on which shore you choose to explore, so build it into a half-day outing rather than expecting a quick stop. Go in spring or early autumn when the light is proper and the midges aren't biblical.

If you're based at Port nan Gael Campsite just four miles away, Loch Fuaran makes an excellent morning adventure before heading back for lunch. It's the sort of detour that justifies a Mull holiday on its own - no crowds, no entrance fee, just landscape on its own terms. Don't expect dramatic cliff scenery or a headline view; expect stillness and the kind of walk that clears your head for days.
