Loch Eye Curling Pond

The frozen surface of Loch Eye in winter is one of those proper Scottish sights that makes you understand why curling became such a thing up here. It's a shallow freshwater loch near Dornoch, and when temperatures drop, locals still use it for the sport - though these days you'll need to check conditions locally before heading out, as reliable ice isn't guaranteed like it was fifty years ago.

What you're looking at is essentially a working curling pond, not a tourist attraction with facilities and a visitor centre. The appeal is straightforward: if you visit in winter and there's good ice, you might catch curlers in action, gliding stones across the frozen surface with that mesmerising precision. In summer, it's just a pleasant loch - fine for a walk round the edges, bird spotting perhaps, but nothing that'll keep you occupied for hours.

This is one for enthusiasts rather than casual visitors. Families with kids might enjoy it for ten minutes to watch the sport in action, but you're not going to find a cafe or much infrastructure here. The nearest proper base is Dornoch, about five miles south, where Dornoch Firth Caravan Park makes a solid spot for a Highland holiday - it's well-positioned for exploring this quieter corner of Sutherland.

Time your visit for January or February if you want the best chance of seeing the loch properly frozen. Even then, phone ahead locally to confirm conditions are safe. It's a nice addition to a wider walking or driving tour of the area rather than a destination in itself.
