Loch Eighinn

Water this dark and still feels almost unreal. Loch Eighinn sits on the Isle of Islay like a mirror someone's forgotten to clean - the surface broken only by the occasional ripple, the surrounding hills reflected so perfectly you'd swear they went down forever.

It's a freshwater loch rather than a sea loch, which means it draws walkers and birdwatchers in decent numbers. The shoreline isn't dramatic - no cliffs, no sudden drops - but there's something genuinely restful about it. You can walk the perimeter if you're determined, though the paths aren't formal tourist routes. It works best as part of a larger Islay circuit - the loch sits between Port Askaig and Ballygrant, so it slots in nicely if you're exploring the island anyway. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no facilities. Free to visit, obviously. Allow an hour if you're just soaking it in from the shore, longer if you're walking the full loop or doing any serious birdwatching.
