Loch Beinn Uraraidh

The loch sits quiet and dark, ringed by moorland that rolls into the distance - proper remote stuff, even by Islay standards. It's a freshwater body tucked into the island's interior, nothing like the dramatic sea lochs you'll find elsewhere on Argyll. What you're really coming for is the walk itself. The approach takes you away from the coastal bustle around Islay's whisky distilleries and into genuine wilderness. There's something restorative about it - bog underfoot, the occasional golden eagle overhead if you're lucky, and the kind of silence that makes you realise how little you actually hear it at home.

Walkers will find this rewarding, particularly those with decent boots and an hour or so to spare. It's not a difficult hike, but the terrain's boggy and the paths aren't always obvious. Families with very small children might struggle a bit; older kids who don't mind wet feet will be fine. There's no facilities, no cafe, no visitor centre - you're bringing a flask and making it what you will.

Timing matters. Morning light across the water is genuinely lovely, and you'll avoid the worst of the midges if you visit late spring through early autumn.
