Loch Ashie

The water at Loch Ashie sits dark and still, hemmed in by Caledonian pine and heather that turns purple come August. It's a proper Highland loch - the kind that makes you understand why people moved here centuries ago and why they still won't leave. You'll find it just south of Inverness, close enough for an afternoon visit but far enough that it feels like proper wilderness.

There's a car park at the loch edge and a decent walking trail that loops around the water. Allow an hour or so if you're moving slowly, less if you're just after a quick leg-stretch. The path is manageable underfoot, though it can get boggy after rain - nothing that requires serious kit, but waterproof boots help. On a clear day you get views across to the Monadhliath Mountains, which is worth the walk alone. Midges can be brutal in summer evenings, so either go early morning or bring a good repellent.

It's a walker's spot rather than a spectator one. Families will get something from it - there's space to run about, water to explore safely from the bank, and the novelty of a proper Scottish loch. History types might enjoy spotting the old pine forests that once covered these glens. It's free to visit and open year-round.
