Llysfaen Community Park

You'll find yourself on proper moorland the moment you step into Llysfaen Community Park - all bracken, gorse, and that particular shade of green you only get in North Wales. The reserve sits on elevated ground above Abergele, offering proper views across the coast when the weather decides to cooperate, which it does just often enough to make the visit worthwhile.

It's a walker's spot, no question about it. The terrain is straightforward enough for families with reasonably fit legs, though the paths can get muddy after rain - bring proper boots. You're looking at a good hour to ninety minutes if you want to cover the main loops without rushing. Birdwatchers rate it highly during migration seasons, and in spring the place comes alive with nesting activity.

The reserve is free to access, which is always a bonus when you're planning a park holiday. If you're staying at Plas Farm Caravan & Lodge Park just down the road, this makes an excellent half-day excursion to stretch your legs between lazing about on site. It won't occupy your entire day, but as part of a broader exploration of the Conwy area it's well worth the detour.

There's something satisfying about getting up on the moorland here - you escape the bustle of the coast without venturing too far inland. The views aren't dramatic in the way of, say, Snowdonia, but they're genuine and the space has a quiet quality that's increasingly rare these days.
