Mynydd Marian

Three hundred and fifty metres above Abergele, this proper little mountain rewards the effort with sweeping views across the Conwy Valley and out to Anglesey on clear days. The climb from the village takes about 45 minutes up a well-defined but steep path that'll get the heart pumping.

Families with older children will manage it fine, though toddlers might struggle with the gradient. The summit itself is marked by a small cairn and offers a cracking 360-degree panorama - on a good day you can spot Snowdon to the west and the coast stretching towards Llandudno.

Being relatively unknown compared to the bigger peaks nearby, you're likely to have the place largely to yourself. It's free to climb obviously, and there's decent parking at the base near the village. Allow two hours for the round trip including time to properly take in the views.

Perfect for stretching the legs if you're staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around Abergele. Bron-y-Wendon Holiday Park sits right at the base, making it an obvious post-breakfast adventure. The climb works well combined with a trip to nearby Conwy Castle - completely different pace but both offer that proper sense of achievement you get from Welsh hills and history.
