Llys-y-frân Reservoir

The moment you round the bend towards Llys-y-frân, the water opens up in front of you like someone's drawn back a curtain. It's a proper surprise if you're driving from Haverfordwest, this vast reservoir cutting through the Pembrokeshire countryside with the Preseli Hills rising up beyond.

You can walk the full circuit - it takes about ninety minutes at a steady pace - and there's something almost meditative about it. The path hugs the shoreline for stretches, then pulls back through woodland where you'll spot herons if you're lucky and patient. The dam end offers the most dramatic views, especially in late afternoon light when the water turns pewter-grey.

Historywise, the reservoir dates to the 1970s and flooded a valley that had been farmed for centuries. Locals have mixed feelings about that, but what's here now is genuinely lovely for walkers and birdwatchers. Families with youngsters under eight might find the walk a bit long, but older kids who don't mind a ramble will be engaged.

It's free to access and there's a small car park at the visitor area. Go early on weekends if you want peace. The nearby campsites - Quarry Park and Three Fields are both excellent - make it a natural rest day during a Pembrokeshire holiday, somewhere to stretch legs without driving far. Water sports aren't allowed here, which keeps it quiet. Just bring binoculars and decent shoes.
