Llys Dorfil

The ruins of a medieval hall sit quietly on a hillside above Blaenau Ffestiniog, easy to walk past if you're not paying attention. Llys Dorfil was once a significant residence - the name translates roughly to 'Dorfil's court' - though exactly who Dorfil was and when it was built remains pleasantly unclear. What remains is a low stone foundation, scattered slate blocks, and the shape of what was probably a substantial timber-framed building, all overgrown with grass and moss.

This is archaeology for people who actually enjoy walking to things rather than stepping off a coach. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no admission fee - you just turn up and look. It takes twenty minutes to reach from the nearest track, and another twenty to properly examine what's left and imagine the structure standing whole. History enthusiasts will get the most from it, especially those interested in medieval Welsh settlement patterns. Kids aged eight upwards might enjoy the detective work of piecing together what stood here, though younger children won't find much to hold their attention.

The real draw is the walk itself and the views across the slate quarries and valleys. Base yourself at one of the nearby campsites - Llechwedd Glamping is closest at under two miles away, while Llyn Gwynant Campsite makes a good option if you want something slightly larger. From here you can combine Llys Dorfil with proper fell walking in Snowdonia, proper meaning challenging and rewarding. Don't visit expecting restored walls or dramatic views. Visit if you like quiet places that require effort and deliver solitude instead.
