Llyn Cwmsilyn-uchaf

The walk up to Llyn Cwmsilyn-uchaf isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough that you'll notice your legs on the way back down. Starting from near Caernarfon, you're heading into proper mountain country - the kind of place where the weather can turn in twenty minutes and you're genuinely glad you wore decent boots.

Once you reach the lake itself, you're looking at a dark, moody expanse of water surrounded by grey stone and sparse vegetation. It's the sort of view that photographs well but hits harder in person - there's something about the isolation up there that makes you realise how small you are. The lake sits high enough that you get real mountain weather, not the tame stuff down in the valleys.

This is walkers' territory, full stop. Don't bring small children expecting a casual stroll - it's got proper gradient and loose sections. Hikers who like their views without the crowds will find it rewarding though, especially midweek. The nearest towns are Caernarfon for supplies, which is sensible enough. If you're staying at Ty'n Llan Camping nearby - which gets genuinely stellar reviews - you could easily make this a morning walk before heading back for a late breakfast.

Free to visit, naturally. Allow a good three hours return, longer if you're not used to hill work. Winter and early spring are better - the light's more dramatic, and you won't be fighting your way past school groups. It's worth doing if you're in the area, but don't plan a whole trip around it.
