Llyn Clywedog Dam

The dam itself is a brutalist concrete wall stretching across the Clywedog Valley, and it's genuinely impressive when you first spot it - all raw engineering and serious purpose. Built in the 1960s to supply water to the Midlands, it's created a proper reservoir that's now become the focal point for outdoor types around Llanidloes.

You can walk right up to it, which takes about fifteen minutes from the car park, and the views across the water are worth the short stroll. The dam holds its own against the surrounding hills - there's something quite striking about human engineering meeting Welsh landscape. The walk itself is straightforward, no scrambling required, though it can get a bit muddy after rain.

Walkers will find this a decent waypoint rather than a full day out. History buffs might appreciate the 1960s industrial heritage angle, though there's no visitor centre or interpretive stuff - you're just looking at the structure itself. Families with younger kids might manage twenty minutes of interest before getting restless.

It's free to visit, and you can turn up whenever. If you're camping at Red Kite Touring Park or Clywedog Riverside, just across the valley, it's an obvious morning or evening excursion. Pair it with a walk around the reservoir perimeter or head into Llanidloes for lunch - the town's got decent pubs and is only a couple of miles away. Don't expect a major attraction, but it's a solid addition to a walking holiday in Mid Wales.
