Llyn Carw

You'll find this small reservoir tucked into the moorland south of Llanwrtyd Wells, surrounded by proper wild Mid Wales landscape. It's not a showstopper - the water sits quiet and dark, ringed by rough grass and low vegetation - but that's rather the point. This is the sort of place you stumble upon while walking, not somewhere you'd trek across Wales specifically to see.

The lake itself is tiny, maybe twenty minutes to walk around if you're ambling. Anglers come here for trout, and you'll spot the occasional fisherman's car parked nearby. For walkers, it works as a stop-off rather than a destination - the moorland paths connecting it to the surrounding hills are the real draw. The Beacons Way passes through this region, so it slots naturally into a longer route if you're tackling those.

If you're staying at Welsh Glamping or Elan Oaks just down the road, it's worth the short walk to see what's there. Don't expect facilities or crowds - there's a car park and that's about it. Spring and early summer are best when the moorland greenery's at its peak; winter can feel bleak. Families with young kids might find it a bit dull unless they're keen on fishing or serious fell walking. But if you like landscapes that don't shout for attention, that reward a quiet morning, this delivers.
