Llyn Canol

This small reservoir sits tucked into the Carmarthenshire countryside, just a couple of miles from Carmarthen town. It's the sort of place locals know about and tourists often miss - which is rather the point. The water is calm and reflective, ringed by rough grazing land and the occasional stand of trees. There's not much infrastructure to speak of, no visitor centre or café, which means it feels properly wild in comparison to some of the larger reservoirs in South Wales.

Walkers will find it worthwhile. The walk around the perimeter isn't strenuous, and the quietness is the main draw - you're unlikely to bump into crowds here. On a clear day the light on the water is lovely, and it's a solid spot for a picnic if you've brought provisions from Carmarthen. Birdwatchers sometimes make the trip too, though it's not a major hotspot. Honestly, with young children who need a proper visitor experience with play areas and facilities, you might find it a bit bare. But if you just want to stretch your legs and breathe some quiet air, it delivers.

It works well as a stop if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Towy Valley Caravan Park and Coedhirion Farm Holidays are both within walking distance if you're keen. The access is free and there's nowhere specific you need to book. Just turn up, park sensibly, and go for a wander. Best visited in decent weather; it can feel rather bleak and windswept when the clouds roll in.
