Llyn Alwen

The drive up to Llyn Alwen feels properly remote. You're winding through dense woodland near Betws-y-Coed, climbing steadily until suddenly the trees open out and there's this dark, moody reservoir reflecting the Welsh sky back at you. It's a straightforward walk around the water - takes about an hour if you don't rush - and the paths are well maintained, which is handy if you've got kids in tow.

The lake itself isn't flashy. No postcard-perfect turquoise water or dramatic peaks jutting straight up from the shore. Instead you get something altogether more atmospheric: moorland, conifers, and that particular quality of Welsh light where the clouds sit low and the whole thing feels a bit mysterious. Walkers get the most from it - proper fell walkers especially, as it's a decent launch point for longer routes across the hills.

There's a decent car park at the top of the road, and you won't pay for parking. No facilities to speak of, so bring what you need. The best time is autumn when the trees turn and the light gets properly low and golden, though it's worth visiting in any season if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - both Porth Eryri and Snowdonia Glamping Holidays are only twenty minutes away. It's the sort of place that fits perfectly into a mountain holiday without demanding your whole afternoon. Go for a walk, get some air, then head back for tea. Don't expect postcards; expect to feel properly in the hills.
