Llyn Aled

Drive up into the Conwy hills and you'll find yourself at Llyn Aled, a proper mountain lake surrounded by moorland that feels properly remote despite being only a short hop from Betws-y-Coed. The water's dark and still most days, ringed by heather and rough grass, with the hills rising up behind it. There's a car park at the top of the access road, and from there it's an easy walk down to the shoreline - maybe ten minutes if you're not dawdling.

It's the sort of place that works best for walkers who want a genuine mountain feeling without needing serious fitness. History types will get a kick from the fact this was where the last wolf in Wales was supposedly killed - though locals will argue about where exactly and when. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find it a bit bleak and windswept on an off day.

Allow an hour or so for a look around. The views aren't spectacular - it's austere rather than showy - but that's rather the point. Come in spring when the moorland starts to green up, or autumn when the light gets dramatic across the water.
