Livability Holton Lee

Holton Lee is an arts and craft centre housed in a Victorian estate just outside Poole, where working artists and makers have their studios open to the public. You can wander through converted farm buildings and a proper manor house, watching potters at their wheels, jewellers bent over their benches, and painters in their light-filled spaces. It's the kind of place where you actually see people working rather than just viewing finished pieces behind glass.

The estate itself is worth the visit on its own - Victorian architecture mixed with countryside, proper grounds to walk around, and a genuine creative buzz. Allow two to three hours if you're poking into studios and chatting to the makers. It's free to wander and look, though buying anything is obviously optional. Go midweek if you can; weekends draw bigger crowds and some of the intimacy gets lost.

For families, it works better with older kids who might actually be interested in watching craft processes rather than wanting to run about. Walkers will appreciate the grounds and the short stroll from Poole. History types will get something from the Victorian buildings themselves, though it's very much a living, working place rather than a museum piece.

Stay at Rockley Park or Sandford, both within a couple of miles, and Holton Lee makes a good half-day stop when you're exploring the broader Poole area. It's not a full-day attraction, but it's proper worth combining with a walk or an afternoon at one of the nearby Dorset heathland parks.
