RSPB Lytchett Fields

The moment you step onto the boardwalks at Lytchett Fields, you realise this isn't a manicured nature reserve where everything's been tidied up for visitors. It's proper wetland - boggy, wild, and absolutely teeming with birds if you time it right. The RSPB site near Poole is essentially a series of ponds and reed beds that attract everything from winter wildfowl to breeding warblers come spring, and the raised wooden paths mean you can get close without trampling the habitat to bits.

You'll want binoculars here, obviously. Serious birdwatchers will spend a full morning combing through flocks for something rare; families with younger kids might manage an hour or so before the novelty of "Is that a duck?" wears thin. Go in winter for the volume of birds, spring for the noise and activity. Summer's quieter but the dragonflies are decent.

It's free to access, which is brilliant, and there's no faffing about with car parks or admission fees. Allow two to three hours if you're genuinely interested in identifying what's about, or a quick 45 minutes if you just fancy a gentle walk. The flat terrain suits wheelchairs and pushchairs reasonably well. Given its proximity to both Hunter's Moon Caravan Club and Wareham Forest Tourist Park, it slots nicely into a Dorset holiday itinerary - especially if you're based at either site and want to get outside without driving miles. It won't blow your mind with views or drama, but as a straightforward birdwatching spot it punches above its weight.
